I started this year prepping and filming Apple Tree Yard, a 4 part series made by Kudos for BBC1, based on a best selling book and starring Emily Watson, Ben Chaplin and Mark Bonner. It’s a far cry from the world of Doctor Who and it takes me back to my interest in modern society and social justice stories. It’s going to be a classy, thrilling, compelling series to watch, I hope.
I have decisions to make. 2016 will bring another series of Doctor Who and another series of Broadchurch, I am currently the costume designer on both of these series, both big, but on different broadcast channels. They will probably film at the same time and I’m only one person, so it’s a big decision. I love both shows and I am torn between them. I am currently considering doubling up, but I’m not sure that would be fair on either project and it doesn’t feel right.
So,that’s the dilemma, which one do I choose? It’s a good choice, the final story from Broadchurch or the final Moffat series of Who?
I will make my decision very soon, I have to and it may take me a little while to say, it’s a big decision.
And also, I haven’t mentioned the other projects I have been approached about, some I would love to design, but I have to address the two big ones first and maybe once this year is over, I will be free for a whole new year to do some new work and explore new offers. So watch this space.
In the meantime, I’m back to Apple Tree Yard. The things to watch out for this year are of course A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which will be the most amazing thing, it’s Shakespeare but it’s also Russell T Davies and BBC Wales and a lovely big cast of brilliant actors, big lovely performances and lovely big design, so try and catch it when it gets broadcast.
